- Even, indirect light. Hard sun blows out the white patches and swallows the black ones, which is exactly the contrast that makes a calico a calico.
- Get the whole cat in frame if you can. A tight face crop loses the back and flank patches that carry most of her pattern.

- Will her patches be in the right places?

- What about dilute calicos?
- Covered. Dilute calicos trade the black and orange for gray and cream, which is a softer contrast and photographs better in slightly brighter light than the tip above suggests. The art follows your photo either way.
- Is a calico the same as a tortoiseshell?
- Not quite, and it matters for the art. A calico has distinct patches of white, black and orange; a tortoiseshell is black and orange mottled together with little or no white. If yours is brindled rather than patched, the tortoiseshell page is the better starting point — but either way the art follows your photo.
